What is IEC?

Import Export Code (IEC) Registration is a 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of India. This code is required for any business or individual involved in import and export activities in India. The IEC registration is mandatory for businesses or individuals engaged in import or export of goods and services from India.

It is a unique identification number that enables the customs authorities to track all international trade transactions carried out by an entity. It is also a prerequisite for obtaining other licenses and permits required for carrying out international trade such as GST registration, EPCG license, etc.

To obtain an IEC registration, an application needs to be filed with the DGFT, along with the requisite documents such as PAN card, Aadhar card, bank certificate, and address proof. Once the application is approved, the DGFT issues the 10-digit IEC code to the applicant.

It is important to note that IEC registration does not confer any exemption on payment of taxes and duties on import/export transactions. However, it is a crucial requirement for conducting international trade in India, and failure to obtain the same may result in penalties and legal implications.
